Caution: Thousands of WordPress Websites Compromised Through MailPoet

It is necessary to do so because, a recent security study has revealed that around 50,000 WordPress websites have been compromised through the vulnerability present in the MailPoet plugin of WordPress. 

Researchers at the security firm Sucuri Labs were the ones who discovered the MailPoet vulnerability. They found the vulnerability earlier this month (July, 2014). According to the reports, the so found vulnerability in MailPoet allows the attackers to upload malicious themes to the WordPress websites and append a backdoor code that will give them full control of the website. These compromised websites, then can be used for spreading malware, defacement, spam campaigns, and more. 

“The malware code had some bugs: it was breaking many websites, overwriting good files and appending various statements in loops at the end of files,” Daniel Cid, Sucuri CTO, said in a blog post. “The biggest issue with this injection is that it often overwrites good files, making very hard to recover without a good backup in place.”
